Day 305. 1st November Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin  Ojo Taken From The Book Of John, Mark, Matthew, And Luke.

THE KISS OF JUDAS

In today’s passages, Judas Iscariot gave kiss another meaning, as it became a sign of identification rather than affection – for Jesus whom he is employed to betray. He walked up to Jesus, gave him a kiss, and Jesus was immediately arrested by the battalion.

JOHN 181-2, MARK 1432-42, MATTHEW 2636-46, LUKE 2239-46

ABBA FATHER!

“When he had finished praying, Jesus left with his disciples and crossed the Kidron Valley. On the other side, there was a garden and he and his disciples went into it.” v.1

They went to Gethsemane though Judas was not among them he knew the place. Jesus took Peter, James and John with him. And said to them “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch” Mk 1434.

  • We see Jesus express very raw emotions here. There is something sweet about life, being joined to the living, so much that even when you have the perfect knowledge of heaven like Jesus, you want to remain here at least a little longer, to continue the work of God here on earth, it's a different way when we get to heaven. Jesus wanted to continue impacting lives perhaps for the next fifty years.

He went a little further, fell to the ground, and prayed “Abba, Father, everything is possible for you. Take this cup from me. Yet not what I will, but what you will. ” Mk 1436, Mtt 2639, Lk 2242  He came back to meet his disciples sleeping for “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” Mk 1438, Mtt 2641. This happened thrice.

It is interesting and reassuring that while praying in anguish an angel from heaven appeared and ministered to him – Lk 2243

  • It is good to note that, Jesus prayed for about an hour each of the time – Mk 1437, Mtt 2640
  • Keeping connected through prayers help us overcome temptation –

(Mk1438, Mtt2641, Lk2246)– Therefore as believers, we must pray frequently!

THE HOUR HAS COME — At the third instance he hastened them up saying “are you still sleeping and resting? Enough! The hour has come. Look, the son of man is delivered into the hands of sinners. Rise! Let us go! Here he comes my betrayer” Mk 1441, Mtt 2645-46.

MARK 1443-52, MATTHEW 2647-56, LUKE 2247-53, JOHN 183-11

THEN JUDAS AND A BATTALION APPEARED —  The chief, the teachers of the law [scribes, Professors of Divinity, Theologians, and the elders (the who is who)]; had instructed them to arrest Jesus.

Judas the bad egg of the twelve had given them the sign -A KISS- he walked up to Jesus called him Rabbi and kissed him and immediately they arrested him.  A disciple stepped up and cut off the ear of an official sent. But Jesus refrained them from using the sword “For all who draw the sword will die by the sword.” Mtt 2652, Lk 2250-51,Jh 1810-11

He challenged the authority of the battalions for approaching him with weapons; stating; He has not led a rebellion but have taught the Jews openly in synagogues or the temple.

  • The book of John 183-9, states in his account of this event that Jesus stepped forward and question the battalion; identifying himself as JESUS, as they sought Jesus of Nazareth (v.4-8).
  • There it was fulfilled as spoken in Jh 639; that; “I have not lost one of those you gave me” Jh 189.

JOHN 1812-14

JESUS WAS TAKEN TO ANNAS THE IN-LAW OF CAIAPHAS (THE HIGH

PRIEST THAT YEAR)

JOHN 1815-24

PETER DENIES JESUS – JOHN 1815-18

Peter followed Jesus into the High Priest’s courtyard – There a girl serving asked to confirm he is a disciple of Jesus but he denied saying “I AM NOT” v.17.  Thus he stood at the fireplace with the officials warming himself.

  • That was the first, we'll find out the next two instances as Jesus' trial progress.

JESUS QUESTIONED — ABOUT HIS TEACHING AND HIS DISCIPLES.

He replied he has always taught not secretly but openly to the world. TEACHING “in synagogues or at the temple where all the Jews come together.” (v.20-21). And the people can be asked instead.

  • An official slapped him that he had answered rudely: “ ‘Is this the way you answer the High Priest?’ He demanded.”
  • Jesus questioned that act of molestation he had been subjected to. But Annas went no further – he had him bond and taken to the high priest. (see v.24).

NIGHT:

1 Corinthians 1013 — "God is faithful, he will not tempt you above what you can bear"

John 1418 — "I will not leave you comfortless"

Adversity, Crisis, Mishap, or Distress; learn to appeal to the Almighty God with his Words and promises. I do this a lot!
