Day 349, 15th December Bible Commentary With Dr Oluwatoyin Ojo From the Book of 1st Timothy, Titus, And 2nd Timothy.
PAUL AND HIS SONS
Paul had many spiritual sons and co-workers, they were a strong network frequently linking up. Which never had an "out of sight out of mind" culture.
His relationship with his spiritual sons Timothy and Titus stood out. The frequency and length of the letters was telling.
Addressing Timothy in this words: "my dear son" 2 Timothy 1:2, and Titus: "My true son in our common faith" Titus 1:4.
1Timothy 6:11-21
LEAD THE GOOD LIFE
Flee from the lust of money, malice, strife, envy, “pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love,, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good faith of the faith. Take hold of eternal life to which you were called when you made your confession in the presence of many witnesses .” v.11-12
Your believes, and your confession during your conversion are same with Christ’s, bear them on your heart, teach them and consider them sacred.
Praising God, Paul describes Him with many of his attributes (read v.15-16 for these)
“He proclaimed God’s immorality and describes him as God who lives in unapproachable light” v.16.
HOPE FOR THE RICH (v.17-21) — if they are not arrogant but are rich in good works, and share; They will enjoy enduring wealth and eternal life (v.17-19)
He encouraged Timothy to keep the faith —(v.20-21) — avoid profane and vain babblings. Do not exalt science above God.
Paul writes to his spiritual son Titus;
TITUS CHAPTER 1:1-16
Paul sends greetings declaring his apostolic agenda: “ To further the faith of the elect” (Read v.1-3).
YOUR MINISTRY IN CRETE — A WRITTEN REFRESHER COURSE
Paul states the reason for Titus's placement in Crete is: To set standards for
ELDERS, OVERSEERS AND THEIR HOUSEHOLD (Read v.5-9)
CRITERIA TO BE MET
• FAMILY LIFE: Based on the conditions (in v.5-9); it could be derived that it is the man, his relationship with his wife and the lifestyle of his household that is being hired for role modelling.
• THE MESSAGE — he must be an adherent “so that he can encourage others by sound doctrine and refute those who oppose it.” v.9
• THE OPPOSITION: In that era rebellion and deceit came mainly from groups that preach circumcision but in modern times you want to identify the miracle workers, and prosperity preachers whose message ignite desperation, greed, lust, fraud and embezzlement. It became so bad that a saying goes against Cretes: “ Cretans are always liars, evil brutes, lazy gluttons.” v.12
“Therefore rebuke them sharply, to produce sound and focused believers that discount all myths (v.13-14). This means that to correct heresy, confrontation most occur.
To the pure all things are pure, to the corrupt nothing is pure — they are unbelievers their claim of knowledge is without evidence.
TITUS CHAPTER 2:1-15
Titus is to teach sound doctrine to:
• Older men (v.2-3a) ,
• Older women {(who should in turn teach the younger women) v.3-5} and
• Young men - to this category he is to teach self-confidence (v.6)
Titus is to live by high standards setting example (v.7-8)
THE WORKING CLASS: Teach employees to be polite, honest, people with high sense of accountability so that they make the Christian faith attractive (v.9-10).
It is grace that enables us to live above sin in this godless age. As we anticipate the 2nd coming eager to do what is good. (v.11-15).
On this count challenge all authorities. Your voice count! (v.15).
TITUS CHAPTER 3:1-15
SUBMIT TO PUBLIC LEADERSHIP AND AUTHORITIES; and teach this to
God’s people.
You all must be armed with good works, peaceable, considerate and gentle.
Not slanderous! Not malicious, envious being hated and hating one another like we once did.
He blessed God for his love, kindness and mercy with which we have been saved — washed and renewed “by the Holy Spirit through Christ our saviour, so that, having been justified by his grace we might become heirs having eternal life.” (v.6-7). Please emphasise this, if you do they will be devote.
GIVE A SECOND CHANCE, to divisive persons.
After that, avoid them (avoid unwholesome talks/arguments/controversies).
Closing, Paul shared his travel plans, diary and invite (v.12). He encourages Titus’s leadership and team to be hospitable (v.13-14).
Greetings and warmth. (v.15)
[beforepersecution of Nero (one year chronological Bible pg.1528) ]. It is believed widely among scholars that the apostle Paul wrote his second letter to his son Timothy shortly before his death in Rome— AD 64 — during the great
2 TIMOTHY 1:1-18
(v.1-5) — Paul opens his letter with — Introduction, compliments (greetings; offers; of mercy, peace), affection and some assurance of support even in prayers.
He refers to the impact of godly parents {Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother
Eunice were genuine and authentic in their faith and in the expression of same}.v.1-5
Again he he reminds Timothy of gifts deposited in him through the laying on of hands
(v.6)
“For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of hands.” v.6
• we must remember prophecies and laying on of hands — spiritual acts confers much (also see v.14)
v.7-13
BE BOLD: Coaching him, he encouraged him to be bold to preach what he believes.
“For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but that of power, love, and a sound mind” v.7
ASSOCIATE WITH THE PAUL’S OF THESE WORLD.
He foretells Timothy, he may suffer like him, preparing him for eventualities!
However, grace is revealed (v.10). Hence there’s no need for shame — (v.12-13)
v.15-18
PAUL WAS DESERTED;
He informs Timothy that; the brethren in the province of Asia, including fellows in ministry: Phygelus and Hermogenes deserted him because of his afflictions.
But Onesiphorus excelled in love. He search for Paul until he found him in Rome — He was also financially/materially supportive. Paul prayed heartily for him and his household (v.16-18)
NIGHT:
“He has saved us and called us to a holy life not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose since the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearance of our Saviour, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel” 2nd Timothy 1:9,10
Rejoice and lead this life!
