Day 17. 17th January Bible Commentary And Summary With Dr. Toyin Taken From The Book Of Genesis.
RELOCATION TO THE DISTRICT OF RAMESES
GENESIS CHAPTERS 45-47.
King Pharoah was delighted with the news of Joseph’s brothers presence in Egypt.
He offers them place in Egypt, the choicest part. He gave them gifts, new clothes and but he gave Benjamin three hundred shekels of silver and five sets of clothes. And sent this to their father "Ten donkeys loaded with the best things of Egypt, ten female donkeys loaded with grain and bread and other provisions for his journey". (v.24). As they left he said ' do not quarrel' And that is a show of affinity, he was already connecting with them.
Jacob Joseph’s father was stunned! I like to describe this as being in a state of shock as he had been mourning Joseph for over twenty years. But when he saw the cart’s and the gifts including donkeys that king Pharoah sent to him. He believed that Joseph is Alive and his soul revived.(45:25-28).
As he left for Egypt, he stop at Beersheba { meaning the well of oath and the well of seven which is a covenant place Genesis 2127-33, 2633 } to pray and God spoke to him!
When your emotions are high, what do you do? When you are sad and deeply distressed what do you do? Israel (Jacob always) prays!
RELOCATION TO THE LAND OF RAMESES.
Joseph met his father up and the rest of the family up at GOSHEN AND IT WAS A VERY EMOTIONAL REUNION.
He had a family meeting with them before their meeting with Pharoah. And he advised them, in preparation for their meeting with Pharoah (4631-34). "Shepherds are detestable to Egyptians, ask to be settled in Goshen" (4633-34).
This step was very crucial, to eliminate and avoid mistakes, rifts, and embarrassment that would otherwise occur.
The meeting was held with Pharoah, he asked them questions about their occupation, ...and Pharaoh allowed them settle in Goshen (v.3-6). Jacob told Pharoah his age (130 years) and Jacob bless Pharoah (v.7-10). They settle in the best part of the land; which is the District Of RAMESES.
(v.11-12).
CHAPTER 47
GIVE US FOOD OR WE DIE!
A SHOW OF DYNAMIC LEADERSHIP IN CRISIS.
v.16-17.The people had exhausted all they had (in cash) buying food from Joseph they resorted to exchange livestock (their horses, flocks, cattle's and donkeys for grain).
v.18-19. After a year they offered their land saying " buy us and our land for bread, give us seed that we may live and not die, that the land be not desolate". v.19
Joseph bought all the land for Pharoah (v.20-21).
v.22. He did not buy the land of the priest because they had allotment of food from Pharoah and had NO REASON TO SELL THEIR LAND.
And through this ( the purchase of all lands) Joseph established an abiding law in Egypt such that, the fifth part is given unto Pharoah and fourth part is kept by the citizens.(v.23-26).
Israel had settled in Egypt and had possessions, and multiplied exceedingly!

“For he established a testimony in Jacob, and appointed a law in Israel, Which he commanded our fathers, that they should make them known to their children”. For an unending testimony!
