Day 55. 24th February Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin Taken From The Book Of  Leviticus.

CELEBRATE REGULARLY — FESTIVALS

LEVITICUS CHAPTER 23-25.

LEVITICUS CHAPTER 23

CELEBRATE REGULARLY:- The LORD commands national breaks and holidays, whereby, the people congregate. Six (6) festivals {plus PASSOVER makes 7}, during which they are to abstain from regular WORK. It is important to note that when the LORD commanded these festivals the first mentioned was the Sabbath day sacred weekly holiday - the 7th day of the week (Sundays) in the calendar. Therefore, including the Sabbath holiday - the total festivals appointed are eight ( a weekly day of rest and 7 yearly festivals).

v.5-8: Every 14th of January; THE PASSOVER AND THE FESTIVAL OF UNLEAVENED BREAD

It starts with the PASSOVER at the eve of the 14th January (the first month) and on the 15th the festival of the Unleavened Bread begins - for seven days.

v.9-14: The FESTIVAL OF FIRSTFRUITS: Bring the best for offerings. ‘Don’t bring leftovers’ , the LORD instructs the people to bring their food and drink offerings before they eat (v.14). It is a holy thing that offerings should not be the last thing in our budget. We should prioritise the LORD.

v.15-22. THE FESTIVAL OF WEEKS: This is perhaps in modern calendar year between March and April and to be Celebrated Yearly. The Lord said to Moses:

‘On that day proclaim a sacred assembly (be together) as a congregation the people should offer SPECIAL OFFERINGS [Burnt Offerings, Grain Offerings, and Drink Offerings]. All these are SACRED OFFERINGS TO THE LORD FOR THE PRIEST.

v.23:23-25. FESTIVAL OF TRUMPETS TO BE CELEBRATED YEARLY. 1st JULY.

v.26-31. THE DAY OF ATONEMENT (a special sabbath), includes fasting from the eve of 9th July to the 10th of July yearly.

v.33-34. THE FESTIVAL OF TABERNACLES: Date: 15th Of July; it’s a seven days holiday to be celebrated. The eighth day is an Holy Convocation.

  • Do no regular work. Proclaim sacred assemblies, bring food offerings to the LORD (v.37). The eighth day is an Holy Convocation.

Therefore, observing holidays are good especially spiritual such as retreats, convocations, holy ghost services, special programmes, and camping.

For Festivals lasting up to seven days the LORD commands his people to leave in temporary shelters - camping - Tents as a memorial of the Journeys - out of the land of Egypt through the wilderness to the Promise Land (v.42-44).

KEEP THE LAMP BURNING:  the LORD INSTRUCTS AARON ( v.1-9).

The people are to bring oil for this purpose (v.1-2). And Aaron is to ensure that the lamps set in the Tent Of The Meeting before the LORD are burning continuously from evening to the next day (v.2-4).

Also, set the BREAD before me regularly - the specific arrangement (v.6) for this is given. (v.5-9).

We must keep the fire on the altar of our hearts burning for the MOST HIGH GOD.

If you are a generous person you will find that your giving fits well into these periodic offerings already, besides this, most churches organise special services and or various festivals to commemorate this commandment.

The LORD provides examples of just judgment (v.10-23).

-Anyone who blasphemes the Name of the LORD is to be killed, Anyone who takes the life of another must be killed, a tooth for a tooth, an eye for an eye, restitution, and more.

CHAPTER 25

OBSERVE THE SABBATH YEAR (Do not sow) eat whatever the land produces. v.1-7.

THE YEAR OF JUBILEE:

Consecrate the fiftieth (50th) year and proclaim the year of liberty to all (v.10) Do not take advantage of each other - I the LORD own the Land (v.14,17,23).

The LORD made promised to bless them with triple harvest (3 years harvest) in the 49th year to cover for the 50th year, the 51st year (the year of sowing) and the 52nd year (the year of fresh harvest after the break) the LORD provides even for this year as part of his plan to avoid distress for the people. (v.8-23).

NIGHT

Ponder/Pray: Psalm 11933  “Teach me, O LORD, the way of thy statutes, and I shall keep it unto the end.”

Consciousness and consistency are keys to righteous living.
