Day 56. 25th February Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin Taken From The Book Of  Leviticus.

DIVINE LAWS

LEVITICUS CHAPTERS 25-26.

CHAPTER 2524-34

In today’s chapters, God continues to provide the people of Israel with laws. Many of these laws are embedded in Local and National policies; and Laws in our modern societies. Some of those laws are not directly relevant due to civilization (for example slave trade). However, due to unequal civilization and development, and the appalling act of modern slavery, they continue to provide bases of governance in some places. The United Nations is forcing Human Rights into actualization in the Nations of our world.

The Laws and the regulations we continue to study today were established at Mount Sinai between the LORD and the children of Israel through Moses.

REDEMPTION OF PROPERTY:- This law allows a poor person who sold their land the opportunity to redeem same ( v.24-35).

REDEMPTION OF THE POOR AND THE ENSLAVED: ( v.35-55). The LORD spake concerning helping people with low income, he commanded interest-free lending, selling at low prices - interest-free trading; transactions even on food.

  • The LORD forbids making the Israelites work like slaves (v.39-43).

Therefore, Israelites retain the right to redemption after the sale of themselves as slaves v.47-55.  If they do not pay back so as to be redeemed, they should be released in the year of Jubilee.

“This is because they are servants whom I brought out of

Egypt. I am the Lord your God” (v.55).

BLESSINGS FOR OBEDIENCE -

The Lord pronounced blessing on obedience.

CHAPTER 26

  • Do not make idols or set up images or a sacred stone for yourselves to worship
  • Observe my Sabbath and have reverence for my sanctuary, I am the LORD.
  • If you follow my decrees and are careful to obey my commands, I will give you rain in season, the land will yield forth abundance and you will live in safety (v.3-5).

v.26:6. I will give you peace, you shall lie down and none will make you afraid. You will overcome your enemies.  I will look on you with favour and make you fruitful and increase your numbers and I will keep my covenant with you.

v.11. I will put my dwelling place among you. You will have to make room for new things. I will walk among you and be your God and you will be my people. I brought you out of Egypt to end your suffering, so you will no longer be slaves. I broke the bars of your yoke and enabled you to walk with heads held high.

PUNISHMENT FOR DISOBEDIENCE 2614-46

Hostility towards THE LORD'S COMMANDMENTS❓

God decrees some punishments if the Israelites reject or refused to obey the laws that he has stated. A part of this is to bring sudden terror (v.16) upon them and make their enemies defeat them. They will flee though no one is pursuing them because He will make their hearts fearful ( 2617,36).

If they persist he will multiply their punishment seven times more. “I will make the sky above you like iron and the ground beneath you like bronze” v.19-20.

The Lord says but if they CONFESS their sins, their unfaithfulness, and hostility towards God which made him hostile towards them as a people, then, He the LORD will remember his covenant with their ancestors (v.42). And he will not reject his people or utterly destroy them, because he brought them out of Egypt before all nations to be their God.

The Lord wants to be your God. The Lord desires a relationship with us, as individuals and as a people. what is your response to him❓

NIGHT: 1 Peter 212-13

Ponder/Pray: “Live such good lives among pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us.  Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority” 1Pt 212-13. This promotes responsibility, obedience, and accountability. And the believer retains the right not to sin.
