Day 296. 23rd October Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin  Ojo Taken From The Book Of John, Matthew, And Luke.

ALABASTER BOX

MARK 143-9, MATTHEW 266-13

IN BETHANY AT SIMON THE LEPER’S HOME; Jesus was reclining when a woman came with an alabaster jar – very expensive perfume – and she poured it on Jesus’ head (Mk 143, Mtt 66-7).

The disciples riled saying – { “What waste!” Mk 144, Mtt 268 - they thought it better to sell the perfume and give the money to the poor}.

Jesus said “Leave her alone… she has done a good work ... You have the poor with you always, and whensoever ye will, ye may do them good: but me ye have not

always” (Mk 146-7, Mtt 2610-11 extracts)

Then he told them it was symbolic; she was preparing him for his burial (Mk 148, Mtt 2612). And she will always be remembered throughout the world where the gospel is preached (see Mk 149, Mtt 2613).

  • [The book of John 121-11, gives an account of the event which seem same- but the scene is in Martha, Mary and Lazarus’ house]; And Mary the sister of Martha was the lady who poured the alabaster oil on him (v.3).

Judas Ischariot who is dishonest with the treasury (for Jesus’ Team) was identified as the one who was infuriated because the alabaster oil is worth a year’s wage and he could loot the money when it is sold (v.4-6). He was the disciple that later betrayed Christ.

  • It became known that Jesus was there and the crowds came to see both Jesus and his friend Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. Therefore, the chief priest would kill Lazarus too, because his testimony continues to bring conviction, and many Jews believed in Jesus. (v.9-11).

MARK 111-11, MATTHEW 211-11, LUKE 1928-40, JOHN 1212-19

JESUS’ VICTORIOUS ENTRY INTO JERUSALEM

This event is written in the four gospels; at Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two of his disciples, saying “go get a colt tied in the village ahead of you, and just as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, which no one has ever ridden, untie it and bring it here.” Mk 112. If asked he told them; take it with a promise to return it soon.

  • [And thus the prophecy according to Zechariah 9:9 was been fulfilled - “say to Daughter Zion, see, your king comes to you on you donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a donkey.”] see Mk 215, Jhn 1214-15

They went and found the donkey and her colt tied in the village; just as he had told them.

He rode on it and the scriptures written in Psalms 11825-26 was fulfilled:

[“Hosanna to the Son of David!”

“Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!" 11825,26

“Hosanna in the highest heaven”] See Mk 119, Mtt 219, Lk 1938, Jhn 1213

The disciples threw their cloak on the donkey, from the crowd was a copious supply of palms from trees, and their cloaks spread on the road as they shouted.   Great was the crowd that day, for the witnesses at the tomb of Lazarus had become disciples spreading the testimony. And the Pharisees were alarmed and said:

  • “See, this is getting us nowhere. Look how the whole world has gone after him!” (v.19).

(Jesus inspects the temple courts late that night, then he went and passed the night at Bethany) Mk 1111

LUKE 1941-44

JESUS WEEPS OVER THE LACK OF INSIGHT OF JERUSALEM and its consequences as he approached the city.

JOHN 1220-36

ANGUISH OF SOUL –

The fame of Christ and his good works grew so that many nationalities sought to see him; some were Greeks who came to worship at the festival (see v.20,23-24).

THE PRINCIPLES OF THE KINGDOM – As a seed sown;

Jesus told them “Verily, verily, I say unto you, except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it dies, it bringeth forth much fruit. Anyone who loves their life will lose it, while anyone who hates their life in this world will keep it for eternal life. Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servants also will be. My Father will honour the one who serves me.” v.24-26.

CHRIST WAS IN DISTRESS and anxious about his death. v.27

He was been glorified and the apex is about to come through death.

  • To that extent, the glory of a believer is present continuous unto eternity – the glorious reunion with Christ.

A voice came from heaven which the people heard, responding to his prayer; (v.27-28)

Jesus: “Father, save me from this hour? No, it was for this reason I came to this hour. Father, glorify your name!”

Voice from Heaven: “I have glorified it and will glorify it again” v.29

– “Some said it had thundered, others said it's an angel.”

Jesus told them of the time —Judgement— He will be exalted, the defeat of  Satan through his death. And many people will be drawn to him the Christ Messiah. As they wondered v.34 he laid emphasis on this

  •   Believe in the light, become children of light (v.35-36).

NIGHT:

Note also that Jesus separates service from followership (living like Christ). John 1226
