Day 297. 24th October Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin  Ojo Taken From The Book Of John, Mark, Matthew, And Luke.

THE FIG TREE

JOHN 1237-50, MARK 1112-14, MATTHEW 2118-22

THE PROPHESIES OF ISAIAH ABOUT THE MINISTRY OF JESUS FULFILLED

— as many did not believe though they witnessed miracles (v.37).

“Lord, who has believed our message

And to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed” v.38–Isaiah 531

“He had blinded their eyes and hardened their hearts,

So they can neither see with their eyes,

Nor understand with their hearts, nor turn—and I would heal them” v.40–Isaiah 610

Yet many believed, including leaders howbeit could not openly declare their faith. v.42

Jesus cried out creating meaning as he declared spiritual truths;

  • 44 – “Whoever believes in me believes the one who sent me.”
  • 45 – “The one who looks at me is seeing the one who sends me.”
  • 46 – “I have come into the world as light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”
  • It is very wrong to HEAR THE WORD and not keep them (read v.47a). Keep here is to do, act on, project, and teach others. Not to keep under the pillow or on the shelf.
  • v.47-49 – I came to save the world, not to condemn nor as a judge against those who reject me. Therefore I do not judge those who reject me, my father whose words I speak is the judge. His words which I speak “will condemn them on the last day” v.48.
  • v.50 – “I know that his command leads to eternal life.”

[They continued their journey from Bethany to Jerusalem.]

MARK 1112-14, MATTHEW 2118-22

JESUS CURSED THE FIG TREE because it had no fruits but leaves which attracted him to it, because he was hungry. His disciples were amazed because the fig tree withered immediately Jesus cursed it.  Then Jesus taught them how faith works:

“Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, not only can you do what was done to the fig tree, but also you can say to this mountain, ‘Go, throw yourself into the sea,’ and it will be done. If you believe, you will receive whatever you ask in prayer.” Mtt 2121-22

MARK 1115-19, MATTHEW 2112-17, LUKE 1945-48

Now at Jerusalem Jesus entered the temple courts and stopped all forms of trade including bureau de change, some sold doves which were bought for sacrifices but Jesus stated: “Is it not written ‘My house will be called a house of prayer FOR ALL NATIONS’?” Mk 1117 – quoting from the old testament prophets, Isaiah 567; “But you have made it a den of robbers” Mk 1117b Jesus spoke quoting from Jeremiah 711.

The chief priest and the teachers of the law were upset but they could not touch him because the crowd liked his teaching.

They were perplexed as they noted and confronted Jesus on the scriptures Psalms 82 was being fulfilled – when children said in praise:

“Hosanna to the son of David” Mtt 2115.

Jesus affirmed Matthew 2116, Psalm 82:

“From the lips of children and infants you, Lord, have called forth your praise’”

The account of the fig tree is also written in Mark 1120-26, as Peter remembered and remarked, Jesus told them the import of faith in God – Asking in prayer, believing, and receiving.

On forgiveness, Jesus stated that;

“And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone forgive them, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins.” v.25

LET’S SCRUTINIZE JESUS! – The chief priest, the teachers of the law, and elders decided to question his authority—

  • “ ‘By what authority are you doing these things?’ They asked. ‘And who gave you authority to do these things?’” Mk 2828-29

And Jesus asked them in turn “John’s baptism—was it from heaven or of human origin? Tell me!” Mk 1130

They lacked the genuineness and authenticity to answer [Mk 1131-32].

v.33 – Thus they said, “We don't know.” Jesus replied “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.”

NIGHT:

Psalm 82 “Out of the mouths of babes and sucklings has thou ordained strength, because of thine enemies, that thou mightiest still the enemy and the avenger.”

The enemy is after the soul and the strength of our children, let us not be weary in well-doing: –

  • endearing them to the Lord
  • Investing in their life ( prayers, our love, and all the resources we can).
