CROWNED
WITH A CROWN OF
THORNS
MARK 152-5, MATTHEW 2711-14, LUKE 231-12
PILATE AND HEROD CROSS-EXAMINED JESUS
As Jesus was brought before Pilate more false accusations were raised against him – including opposing tax laws. Yet he gave no reply.
Then Pilate asked – “Are you the king of the Jews?” Mk 152, Mtt 2711, Lk 233, Jesus replied in the affirmative “You have said so.”
JESUS IS A GALILEAN UNDER THE JURISDICTION OF HEROD
In the course of the cross-examination, Pilate (Governor) became aware he is a Galilean, and sent him to King Herod.(Lk 236-7).
Herod the King was Excited and eager to meet with Jesus — wishing he could witness a miracle or any supernatural sign. Howbeit Jesus gave no response to any of his many questions. Herod had him dressed up and returned to Pilate.
“Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate.” Lk 2311.
This event turned the two enemies (Herod and Pilate) friends. Lk 2312.
THE SUMMARY OF THE TRUTH; John 1836-37
- “You are king, then!” said Pilate. v.36
- Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. In fact, the reason I was born and came into the world is to testify of the truth. everyone on the side of the truth listens to me.” v.37
THE KING OF THE JEWS OR BARABAS:-
It was customary to release one prisoner during the Passover in accordance to the wish of the people. Pilate persuades the people to have him release the king of the Jews-JESUS (Jh 1839, Mk 159-10, Mtt 2717-18; but rejecting his suggestion they demanded the release of a popular criminal named Barabbas – Jh 1840
Yielding to the conspiracy (see, Mk 1511) the crowd shouted that Jesus be crucified! (Mk 1513-14).
Mark 1514-15, MATTHEW 2719-26
PILATE SUCCUMBED TO THE CROWD —
“Wanting to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas to them. He had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.” Mk 1515.
The people pressed on shouting, that, Pilate should crucify Jesus. There was divine intervention as Pilate’s wife had dreamt that night — She informed Pilate — “Don't have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”Mtt 2719
But the crowd revolted and would riot. Thus, Pilate washed his hands in front the crowd stating “I am innocent of this man’s blood, it is your responsibility.” Mtt 2724.
- "He released Barabbas to them. But he had Jesus flogged, and handed him over to be crucified.” v.26.
JOHN 192-16, MARK 1516-20
CROWNED WITH THORNS:
Jesus been mocked, rough handled and flogged was crowned with a crown made of thorns which the soldiers made, and clothed in purple ropes, they said to him “‘Hail, king of the Jews!’, And they slapped him in the face.” Jh 193., Mk 1516-18.
It was a wrestle of power; between Pilate, the crowd and the Jewish leaders;
- “The Jewish leaders insisted, ‘We have a law, and according to that law he must die, because he claimed to be the Son of God’.” Jh 197
- Then Pilate the governor became even more afraid (see v.8)
- Jesus answered Pilate’s series of questions; who was exercising authority and talking rather friendly though under pressure to act, saying “You would have no
power over me if it were not given to you from above. Therefore, the one who handed me over to you is guilty of a greater sin.” Jh 1911
- “Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jewish leaders kept shouting, ‘ if you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. anyone who claims to be a king opposes Caesar.’.” Jh 1912
FINALLY, AT GABBATHA (The Stone of Pavement) Pilate handed them the king of the Jews to be crucified. (Jh 1913-16).
