Day 309. 5th November Bible Commentary With Dr. Toyin Ojo Taken From The Book Of Mark, Matthew, Luke And John.
RABBONI!
JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA ASKED FOR JESUS’ BOBY AND PILATE APPROVED
HIS REQUEST
It was preparation day, a day before the Sabbath. Although Joseph was a council member and very influential he had become a disciple of Jesus. Nicodemus was with him and he brought spices.
“taking Jesus’ body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen.
this was in accordance with Jewish burial customs.” Jh 1940, Mk 1546
JOSEPH OF ARIMATHEA PAID FOR A TOMB
Then they laid Jesus in a new tomb, in the garden which Joseph who hails from Arimathea had acquired.
- “So Joseph brought some linen cloth, took down the body, wrapped it in the linen, and placed it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb.” Mk 1546, Mtt 2759-60, Lk 2353, Jh 1941
Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph witnessed all this. Mk 1547, Mtt 2761, Lk 2355.
- “The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. They went home and prepared spices and perfume. Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joseph witnessed all this. Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.” Lk 2355-56.
MATTHEW 2762-66
GUARDS POSITIONED AT JESUS TOMB as demanded by the chief priests and the teacher of the laws.
They do not want his body stolen with claims that he has risen – referring to what they had heard Jesus say. Pilate instructed them to secure the tomb, the best they can and have guards there!
MARK 161-8,9-11, MATTHEW 281-7, LUKE 241-12, JOHN 201-18 JESUS
IS NOT THERE!
After the Sabbath when Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James and Salome had gone to the tomb to anoint Jesus’ body with some spices he had resurrected; the tomb was empty. Two angels spoke to them reminding them what Christ had told them;
“While they were wondering about this, suddenly two men in clothes that gleamed like lightning stood beside them. …. but the men said to them, “Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here; he has risen! Remember how he told you, while he was still within Galilee.” (Lk 244,5,6 extracts).
The women (including Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the James, and others), took the news to the 11 disciples and all others.
- Mary also told the people of her encounter (Mk 165-11).
PETER WENT STRAIGHT INTO THE TOMB;
Two of his disciple ran to confirm what the women had notified them of.
“Finally the other disciple, who had reached the tomb first, also went inside. He saw and believed. (They did not understand from scripture that Jesus had to rise from the dead.) Then the disciples went back to where they were staying.” Jh 208-10.
“MARY” “RABBONI”
Mary remained outside the tomb crying two angels attended to her. (Read Jh 2011-12).
- “They asked her, ‘Woman, why are you crying?’” v.13a
- “She replied ‘They have taken my Lord away, and I don’t know where they have put him.” v.13b-c
- Then Jesus appeared to Mary:- “He asked her: “Woman why are you crying? Who is it you are looking for?” v.15.
She assumed he was the gardener. And asked to know where he had taken him to, if he had taken him.
- She apparently had been traumatized witnessing the crucifixion of Christ, his death, and burial. SHE MUST HAVE BEEN TIRED!, I believe she was only strengthened to do all she did from her heart which is full of love. The culture also demanded modesty from women, therefore until Jesus called her by name she hadn't looked up to see who it was questioning her
Then He called her “Mary.” Jhn 2016a, and she turned to find it was Jesus that had been talking to her and she exclaimed “Rabboni!” ( means Teacher).
“Jesus said do not hold on to me, for I have not yet ascended to the
Father. Go instead to my brothers and tell them, ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.’” Jh 2017
JOHN 2018, MATTHEW 268-10 MEET
ME UP IN GALILEE
- She went and told it all to the disciples.
The book of Matthew states that “The women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples” Mtt 288. And Jesus appeared to them instructing them to advise the disciples to meet up with him in Galilee (Mtt 289-10).
MATTHEW 2811-15
THE OFFICIAL REPORT was given to the chief priests by the guards in-charge of the tomb but they thwarted the reports with bribes given the guards. It was published that Jesus was stolen and that remains the official news among the Jews to this very day. (Read v.13-15).
NIGHT:
Let every woman pray for the grace of the Women on Jesus Team. Men pray for the women you know. Matthew 2761, Lk 2355-56
