LIFESTYLE
Today’s commentary progress into the books of Philemon and Philippians. Paul’s letter to Philemon is a single chapter; expression of greetings, thanks, appeal for Onesimus being the focus of his letter to Bro. Philemon his fellow and friend in ministry. Concluding, that to the commentary and summary of his letter to the Philippians.
PHILEMON CHAPTER 1:1-25
Paul opens his letter with greetings, offers of grace and peace (v.1-3). His primary recipient is Philemon, he expects Sister Apphia, Bro. Archippus and members of the church to be aware of the content of the letter. It therefore, characterized as an open letter.
PAUL’S PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING, COMMENDATION, AND
WARMTH (v.4-7).
“I pray that your partnership with us in the faith may be effective in deepening your understanding of every good thing we share for the sake of Christ.” v.6
PHILEMON IS A MAN OF ACT; within the body of Christ (local and every) to such extent, his news is producing Joy and encouragement.
v.8-21
REDEEMING ONESIMUS:
Paul subtly throws his weight on the letter; presenting an appeal to Brother Philemon: redeeming Onesimus who seem to have led an idle, and unproductive life thus an irrelevant life known to all. But has changed. Being mentored by Paul (v.10). “So if you consider me a partner welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me. I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand. I will pay it back not to mention that you owe me your very self." v.18-19
HINTS:
• He plans a visit in faith (v.22)
• He closed the letter sharing grace, and greetings with mentions; connecting friends to friends thereby! (v.23-25) Reflect: How old was Paul at this
time (v.9).
Reflect: How fluid should church membership/association be? Could moving around create offense? (v.12-14).
PHILIPPIANS CHAPTER 1:1-30
PAUL’S LETTER TO THE BELIEVERS AND LEADERSHIP OF THE CHURCH IN PHILIPPI
• OVERSEERS
• DEACONS
(v.3-11) — Paul’s prayers, commendation, and expression of warmth. “Being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus" (v.6).
He did not only feel warmth; he expressed it in words and his love was pure (v.1-8):
“I feel this way, I have you in my heart, I long for all of you with the affection of Christ Jesus”
PAUL’S STATE OF BEING — APOSTOLIC PROFILE — HIS JOB
EXPERIENCE
In chains (prison), or defending and confirming the gospel.
“Now I want you to know, brothers and sisters, that what has happened to me has actually served to advance the gospel” v.12
• His delight is that the gospel is preached for Christ — The believers are emboldened.
He exposed the different motives “committed Christians" in Church and in the body of Christ at large have; ENVY, RIVALRY, LOVE, SELFISH AMBITION. Yet Paul is gladdened saying “for I know that through your prayers and God’s provision of the
Spirit of Jesus Christ what has happened to me will turn out for my deliverance” v.19
• We should align our motives and imitate Paul’s; revealed in v.9-10 — developing the believer for the resurrection. So that whether we have slept at the time or alive on earth; to be rapturable.
ALL I WANT IS COURAGE — PAUL’S SOUL CRIED
Paul aware of his state – his chain, is very depressed, though he has matured to be enabled to discount the shame of his humbling state. He wrote: “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.” v.21
He would live just so the believers —the faith— is advanced.
LIFESTYLE: He demands lifestyle Christianity. A living not diminished by opposition (the unbelievers); ready to endure and overcome challenges (suffering).
PHILIPPIANS CHAPTER 2:1-11
MAKE THE ESSENCE OF YOUR FAITH UNITY — LIKEMINDEDNESS (v.3-4)
See how Christ and God related. Paul wrote that “Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing” (v.5-7a); and appeared unto us as a man; then he accepted an humbling death — he was crucified (v.8).
• Copy that!
SEE HIS EARNINGS:— An exalted name above all in heavens and on earth, known and acknowledged on every tongue {(Read v.9-11), know by heart v.10-11}!
NIGHT:
Philippians 2:10-11 JESUS:
Concerning Jesus it is written “that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the father” v.10-11
