Day 351, 17th December Bible Commentary With Dr Oluwatoyin Ojo From the Book of 2nd Timothy And Hebrews.
TODAY
Let's continue these studies together, taking on a new book (THE BOOK OF HEBREWS), finding God's voice through the epistle of an unknown writer.
God has a new expectation: “he had appointed Moses who was faithful in all God’s house. Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses” Hebrew 32
Today, let’s find God the builder of everything as we celebrate Christ: Son over God’s house (Hebrews 34,5).
2 TIMOTHY 4:19-22
Paul closes his letter very warmly with greetings, and updates mentioning names. It is significant that he mentioned Trophimus one of the brethren who is sick, he had been with him in Miletus — this report is a humble acceptance that the power to perform miracles is God’s, (see v.20), this will also allow for intercession.
• “The Lord be with your spirit. Grace be with you all” (v.22) were the words that closed the letter.
The author of the book of Hebrews is unknown it is thought to have been written by Paul/Barnabas/Apollos; to a group of Jewish Christians before the destruction of the temple in AD 70 (see One Year Chronological Bible niv pg.1531).
GOD SPEAKS:
He hath spoken through prophets severally in diverse ways, but now does through his Son superior to angels and his diverse teams of heavenly realm. The heir of all things, that provides purification for sins (v.3), his superiority is proven by his name above all angelic beings; proclaimed by God as Son to be worshipped (v.4-7), with an everlasting throne endowed with the scepter of justice — who is also a total and perfect expression of joy. (v.8-9)
“You have loved righteousness and hated wickedness: therefore God, your God, has set you above your companions by anointing you with the oil of joy.“ {v.9; Psalms
456,7}
While the earth, everything, wear out like a garment Christ remains.
“You will roll them up like a robe; like a garment, they will be changed. But you remain the same, and your years will never end.” (v.12; Psalm 10225-27)
Don’t place angels above Christ. Angels come to us to aid our salvation brought by Christ (v.14)
HEBREWS 2:1-18
DON’T DRIFT
Be careful therefore to diligently use the helps you received through angels and never ignore, disregard, or slumber on your salvation.
“How shall we escape if we ignore so great a salvation? This salvation, which was first announced by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard him. God also testified to it by signs, wonders, and various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit distributed according to his will.” v.3-4
THERE IS AN ACCUSATION WHICH IS BEFORE GOD AGAINST
MANKIND, for we are made just a little lower than the angels. But Christ being superior, to endow us worthy, became like us and experienced death.
“So that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone. In bringing many sons and daughters to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the pioneer of their salvation perfect through what he suffered.” v.9-10
This way Christ graciously made us brothers and sisters, this was the plan and this he publicly declared (Read v.11-13)
The shame of death became the devils, as we triumph in the knowledge of our merciful and faithful high priest — he knows our temptations in experience —(being made flesh and blood)— in very literal sense. v.14-18
HEBREWS 3:1-19
“Therefore, holy brothers and sisters, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, whom we acknowledge as our apostle and high priest.” v.1
We are in a very different time — each as God’s house — with Christ a faithful Son over God’s house.
If compared to Moses, Moses was a faithful servant in God’s house, Jesus’ honor is therefore greater. (v.1-6)
“And we are his house, if indeed we hold firmly to our confidence and hope in which we glory.” v.6
REBELLION — UNBELIEF
We must hold firm our convictions as originally — when we first believed because unbelief is rebellion against God and from that expression he turns away just like he did to our ancestors in the faith — in the wilderness. (v.7-19; Psalm 957-11)
Therefore, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as you did in the rebellion.” (v.15, Psalm 957,8)
HEBREWS 4:1-13 THERE REMAINETH A REST — TODAY
“Therefore, since the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us be careful that none of you will be found to have fallen short of it.’ v.1
Thus, we owe it to faith, we owe it to God, to proclaim the gospel — the good news that we believe or we are guilty of disobedience and cannot enter into his rest. ‘God again set a certain day, calling it “Today.” This he did when a long time later he spoke through the David, as in the passage already quoted: Today if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.” (v.7; ref:Psalms 95:7,8)
• Your day may not be your neighbour’s day. But your day is known and recorded for or against you by God.
Though the ancestors led by Joshua enter a temporal rest, earthly, transitory, “There remaineth a rest for the people of God.” (v.10)
Strive to enter that rest (from labour, from the earth) like God did to abide then with him where he is, when you are old and depart the earth.
“For the word of God is alive and active sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; IT JUDGES THE THOUGHTS AND ATTITUDES OF THE HEART” v.12
Aware of the above and the fact that “nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight” v.13a; we must expect that he would demand an account!
NIGHT:
TODAY yours may be a call to rededicate your life or refrain from evil. Or a call to salvation.
In any case, harden not your heart. Hebrews 4:7; Psalm 95:7,8.
