Day 352, 18th December Bible Commentary With Dr Oluwatoyin Ojo From the Book of Hebrews.
GRACE TO HELP
HEBREWS 4:14-16
AWARENESS OF CHRIST OUR HIGH PRIEST — we need to live life with this consciousness, plus clear truths, that he lived and was tempted like we frequently are. With this eagerness, therefore “Lets us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” v.16
CHAPTER 5:1-14
Every High Priest Is Appointed and this is indeed a calling, just like
Aaron was called so was Christ called — “God said to him: ‘You are my Son; today I have become your Father.’” v.5; ref Psalm 27; Again you find this buttressed in v.6 — “You are a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek” Psalm 1104
In prayers, petitions, fervent cries, and tears did Jesus communicate with God for his death to be averted but that was his pathway to learn obedience; through suffering into perfection; a realization of eternal salvation for all who obey him. He, therefore “was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.” (v.10)
LACKING PROWESS v.11-14
— The writer likens the believer (indeed the modern-day believers) to an infant requiring milk and not solid food. Because in act and understanding, they have not proven to consistently apply God’s word, acquitted with righteousness. To become experts at distinguishing good from evil. Such persons are incapable of teaching others.
• “In fact, though this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again. You need milk, not solid food!“ v.12
CHAPTER 6:1-20
In Christianity, the act of teaching is in:
1. lifestyle and
2. knowledge of the word of truth.
If however a person who has been enlightened; has enjoyed it all — Repentance,
Baptism, known the power of resurrection, the laying on of hands, and the gifts of the Holy Spirit then fall—such a shameful fall attempts to crucify Christ again, subjecting him to public disgrace but no they are nailed, haven lost the gift of Christ’s crucifixion (v.4-8).
But for fellows who persevere “God is not unjust to forget, he will not forget your labour of love” v.10
“We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised.” v.12
IN FAITH COMBINED WITH PATIENCE, LET’S IMITATE
ABRAHAM, God has sworn by himself (v.13-18) — since there was no one greater for him to swear by, he swore by himself (v.13)
“God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become an high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” v.1820
CHAPTER 7:1-28 THE SUMMARY OF THE MEETING BETWEEN MELCHIZEDEK THE
KING OF SALEM AND ABRAHAM GIVEN (v.1-4; ref Jan 4th, day 4
Commentary/Genesis 1418-20); this furthers the tithing observed (v.5-10) Note that:
• Melchizedek means — King of Righteousness
• King of Salem means — King of Peace
From time, we have seen that the Levitical Priesthood & the Law does not bestow perfection. Therefore, with Christ, the priesthood changed from that established with and through Aaron. (See v.12).
“It is Christ who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of an indestructible life.” (v.16).
For whom this has also been declared: “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.” v.17; With a sworn oath said by God; “The Lord has sworn and will not change his mind: ‘You are a priest forever’” v.21; {ref. Psalm 110:4}
“Because of this oath Jesus has become the guarantor of a better covenant.“ v.22
Since he does not die like the other priests did; his is a forever-lasting priesthood “able to save COMPLETELY those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.” v.25
And being blameless and holy, he does not offer sacrifices, unlike the previous. (Read v.26-27).
• “He sacrificed for our sins once and for all when he offered himself” v.27
• v.28— The law appoints High Priest ( full of weaknesses ). The oath appointed the Son — from whom grace flows to us in time of need NIGHT: Hebrews
4:16
“Let us approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” Amen.
