Day 10. 10th January Bible Commentary And Summary With Dr. Toyin Taken From Genesis Chapter 28,29,30.
THIS IS THE GATE OF HEAVEN
GENESIS 281-9
- ANGELS ASCENDING AND DESCENDING
- ESAU MARRIES ISHMAEL'S DAUGHTER. (Hagar's Granddaughter). Realising it would displease his father Isaac (v.6-9).
ANGELS ASCENDING AND DESCENDING: 2810-22.
v.11. On his way to Haran from Beersheba, he stopped at a certain place in LUZ (now Bethel) at night; he took a stone of that place and used it for pillows. (life was very different then, and now certainly more advanced we use fiber and readymade cotton wool). He had a dream and he saws a ladder (stairway) set up on earth reaching up to heaven and angels ascending and descending on it. And he saw the lord above it and said to him (v.13 -17) "I am the LORD GOD of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed; And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shall spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed. And behold I am with thee and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and I will bring thee again to this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of" (28:13-15).
v.16-17.
Jacob woke up and said 'Surely the LORD is in this place, and I was not aware'.
Afraid he said how dreadful is this place! This is none other but THE HOUSE OF THE LORD AND THIS IS THE GATE OF HEAVEN.
I CONSIDER THE LADDER (STAIRWAY) SYMBOLIC IN DREAMS. IN MORE MODERN DAYS YOU MAY SEE AN ESCALATOR as well.
JACOB set up a pillar using the stone he used for a pillow and pour oil on top of it. He called the place Bethel. And made a vow: of commitment and requests, including paying a tenth of everything (v.20).
GENESIS 29
291 JACOB ARRIVES PADDAN ARAM,
By a well he met Shepherds to whom he told his mission and ask for LABAN's house and they said behold Rachel his daughter coming with her father's Flock she is a Shepherd like us. And he rolled the stone that covered the well and watered her flock. He kissed her, cried aloud, and told her who he was (v.11-12). Rachel ran to inform her father Laban. He hurried to Jacob, embraced him, and kissed him. Excited they went to Laban's house, and Laban said 'this is my bone and flesh' (v.13-14).
After a month (v.15) Laban asked what Jacob would appreciate as wage, but Jacob opened up that he like Rachel for a wife and offered to work for 7 years paying for her Bride Price (v.16-18). And Laban agreed (v.19).
It is important that men take a lesson here, and place good value on their betrothed, or girlfriends as we would say in modern times, and or wives. Some men never paid Bride Price, pay for wedding rings, venue, or buy gifts therefore disregard the place of the woman in their lives when married. Rebekah began to receive gifts (gold nose ring and bangles as soon as she was recognized as a potential wife for Isaac) and here Jacob of his own volition offered his 7 years wage.
- Men, it is important to learn how to give gifts.
Women
We find blessings in our routine and should work; investing our time wisely. Also having a good reputation is important, sometimes men ask around!
v.22-26. Laban deceives Jacob, gives him Leah instead; it was at night after the feast and he took Leah to the room. Jacob made love to Leah and only realized it was Leah in the morning (next day). Upset he question why he had been deceived, Laban simply gave an excuse of custom: it is not the custom to give the younger in marriage before the older. I should think that he should have been advised earlier! Jacob could be seen to have been reaping the seeds of the deception he had sown! (by deceiving his own father and taking his elder brother Esau's blessings).
v.26. Laban offers Jacob Rachel for another 7 years wage. He accepts (v.28). He loved Rachel but hated Leah.
Domestic War and unhealthy competition began as Jacob marries two sisters!
- This marks a case of polygamy too! though unintended.
The names of the children in the family were given in rivalry 2932-35, 301-24.
God saw that Leah was hated (29:31) and opened her womb but shut Rachel's womb and she was barren until Leah had her seventh child. Then the LORD remembered Rachel and hearkened to her and opened her womb and she bore Joseph.
During the competition, before the LORD opened Rachel's womb,
Rachel became jealous and lashed out at Isaac, she said 'Give me children or I die'
Isaac responded angrily; 'I'm I in the place of God, that withheld your womb from conception?'
Thus she gave Bilhah her servant to him as a wife and she bore him two sons. Leah did the same.
Polygamy as we see became dirty, it could get dirtier, and these are some of the reasons why I would not favour a polygamous relationship. It gets worse in Africa with Juju, second wives going to Babalawos, and other diabolic practices.
May the Good LORD, the God of our father Abraham remember us – amen.
NIGHT:
To experience angelic encounters and help like Jacob did we must desire and serve God single-heartedly.
Psalm 1825-26 “With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful, with an upright man thou wilt shew yourself upright. With the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure, and with the forward thou wilt show thyself forward”
“Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And let everyone that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity” 2 Timothy 219
